The National Guards Unit is the successor to the personal guard established in 1879 by Prince Alexander I Battenberg.
By Decree No. 124 of the Council of Ministers dated 14 May 2001, the National Guards Unit was established as a representative military unit of the Bulgarian Army. It participates in representative and protocol events of national importance, in which the President of the Republic, the President of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence and the Chief of the General Staff of the Bulgarian Army participate.
The National Guards Unit has been established as a representative military unit within the Armed Forces and a structure directly subordinate to the Minister of Defence.
The mission of the National Guards Unit today is not only to uphold and present the best military traditions and rituals, but also to be a focus for their revival and enrichment in the name of preserving and establishing national identity.
The Day of the National Guards Unit is on 12 July.
